Ferrari is recalling all 1248 458 Italia models it had produced until the end of August after five of the 202mph cars caught fire after glue in a wheel arch melted on to the exhaust.

This is possibly the biggest recall to date for a luxury car producer and very embarrassing as it follows internet postings of cars catching fire in California, Paris, Switzerland and China.

Ferrari said the cars combusted during “extreme uses in very high temperatures,” and that some of the cars that had incorrectly had glue used which will now be replaced by metal fasteners.

As an aside a “Flamin’ Ferrari” is a rum-and-Grand Marnier cocktail beloved of London’s financial high rollers.

At Road & Track, we always strive to bring the latest and greatest car news and tests. We looove tests. But sometimes we can’t get the break we need. The manufacturers may have a coordinated international launch scheduled out, or maybe a particular trim is not destined for our consumption. Or maybe it’s just our breath?

Regardless of the reason, sometimes an industry insider will leak pre-release info onto his or her favorite forum or blog, and then we get to spread the news without any regard to embargoes. After all, this is all public domain information!

So, check out some information about the upcoming 2012 Nissan GT-R. The changes center primarily around appearance, but one appearance update, the wheels, are also lighter and stronger. I must say they look particularly good.

Fresh from Monterey, California, where it made its North American debut during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance event, the new McLaren MP4-12C made a stop at Road & Track for a brief photo session. As expected, nearly everyone from our office filed out to see this new supercar in person.

Prior to its arrival, we were told that this silver McLaren 12C was a show car, and that it cannot be driven. We guessed it was probably powered by an electric motor similar to many other cars of this type intended to show to the public as a prototype. But to our surprise, the 12C came to life with a big roar, thanks to its twin-turbo, 600-bhp 3.8-liter V-8. According to the factory, the car can accelerate from a standstill to quarter mile in around 11 sec. Top speed is rated at over 200 mph.

And believe me, we have been, and continues to pester McLaren about the first opportunity to drive the 12C ourselves. Perhaps we will finally get our turn behind the wheel late this year. Or maybe if we can come up with $200k and put in an order for one, McLaren will put us in front of the line?

Could this be the world’s most powerful street legal car?

Based on a 1967 Vauxhall Victor FD, ‘Red Victor 3’ is powered by a twin-turbo charged 8.8-litre V-8 developing 3000 bhp.

It heralds a new partnership between Vauxhall’s sporting VXR brand and the Red Victor team for the 2011 MSA Pro-Modified Drag Racing season.

While the car is still in development, the Red Victor team is predicting a top speed, to begin with, of 240 mph in the quarter-mile, which it should achieve in 6.5 seconds. And there’s no reason to doubt them: their last project, Red Victor 2, was capable of nearly 200 mph in the quarter-mile and 0-153 mph in 4.8 seconds.

One Swedish motorist could be facing a gargantuan speeding fine — up to $962,000 — after he was caught driving 180 mph along a Swiss motorway.

Police seized the Swede's driver's license and 570-horsepower black Mercedes-Benz after he was released from police custody, The Local, a website that covers Swedish news, reported. He could face a penalty of up to 1 million Swiss francs — or $962,000 — depending on his income level, The Local reported.

In Switzerland speeding fines are based on the severity of the offense and the offender's income level.

Police said the 37-year-old motorist was driving so fast in this $240,000 sports car that it took him nearly half a mile to stop.

Swiss officials did not know if it was a record, but that it "looks very close to one," federal roads office spokesman Thomas Rohrbach told AFP.

"We have no record of anyone being caught traveling faster in the country," a police spokesman told Britain's Daily Telegraph on Friday.

The driver's explanation to officers: "I think the speedo on the car, which is new, is faulty."

A speed camera on the A12 highway between Bern and Lausanne captured the transgression.

Police said he had eluded being zapped by numerous radars en route simply because he was going too fast and they were unable to clock speeds beyond 125 mph. A newer camera perched along the motorway was able to snap his offense.

It's not the first time someone has had to pay such a hefty fine in Europe for speeding. And even lower speeds can generate big fines.

In January, a Swiss court slapped a $290,000 speeding ticket on a millionaire Ferrari driver who drove 60 mph (nearly twice the 30 mph limit) through a small village.

The head of Finnish communications giant Nokia was ordered to may a $103,000 fine for his speeding ticket in 2002. Officers pulled over Anssi Vanjoki on his cherry red Harley Davidson in Helsinki after he was clocked driving 47 mph in a 31-mph zone.

In Finland, traffic fines are also proportionate to an offender's crime and income level.
Another reason to "Keep it off the streets."
